EP.8 | Beyond the mist

When the mist clears, the villagers realize that the world they once knew was never the whole of what exists.

Things that once seemed fixed begin to feel less certain. Distance, movement, and the passage of time are no longer experienced in quite the same way. A place that once felt far away can suddenly seem close in experience. A single moment may stretch unexpectedly, while hours can pass with barely a trace.

As perception shifts, people may describe experiences such as time feeling elastic, distance losing its usual meaning, dreams taking on an unusual sense of reality, or several possibilities seeming present at once.

These experiences alone do not tell us that someone has entered a different form of reality. They can still loosen a familiar assumption: reality may extend beyond the way we normally experience it in everyday life.

Beyond the mist may lie parts of reality that have always existed outside the familiar range of human perception.

What remains hidden may be closer than we think.

Closing note

You have stepped beyond the mist.

Across the eight parts of The Unseen, what was once called invisible has appeared in many different forms: organisms difficult for the human eye to detect, sensory worlds unlike our own, the pineal gland and the “third eye,” changing states of the brain, ways of classifying senses beyond the familiar five, and ideas that human perception may once have been richer before gradually narrowing.

Each topic has moved through a different region of biology, the history of ideas, mysticism, and human experience. The strength of the evidence also varies. Their common ground is the limit of perception: we encounter only the portion of reality that the body and consciousness are able to register.

When that limit changes, the way reality appears can change with it.

The Multidimensionality series will continue with three frames of reference that are often grouped together under the single word “multidimensional”: spatial dimensions, dimensions of consciousness, and dimensions of reality.
