We tend to experience a decision in a simple sequence: we think, weigh our options, and then choose.
That subjective experience reflects only the part of the process we are aware of.
By the time a choice becomes something we can put into words — “I want this” or “I’ve decided” — the brain and body have already been processing a wide range of signals: stress, energy level, physical comfort, heart rate, internal sensations, previous experience, and what is happening around us.
Part of a decision can therefore take shape outside conscious awareness before it becomes a feeling, preference, or intention we can clearly identify.
The brain is constantly receiving information from inside the body.
The process of sensing and interpreting internal signals such as heartbeat, breathing, hunger, pain, muscle tension, and activity within the organs is known as interoception.
These signals contribute to emotion, discomfort, ease, and the way we evaluate a situation. They can also influence whether we approach, avoid, take a risk, or pull back.
So a decision is shaped by more than the thoughts we can hear in our own heads. The state of the body is part of the process as well.
Signals also travel continuously between the brain and other systems throughout the body, including the digestive system. The gut–brain axis is one example of this wider two-way communication.
Sometimes we walk into a room and immediately feel tense without knowing why.
Someone may make us feel at ease or unusually guarded almost at once.
A hand may pull back, the heart may speed up, or the body may shift into a more alert state before we have formed a clear explanation for what is happening.
In moments like these, physiological changes and neural processing may already be underway before conscious understanding catches up.
Experiments on voluntary movement, beginning with the work of Benjamin Libet, also found brain activity associated with preparing an action before participants reported becoming aware of the intention to move. These findings have been debated for decades and do not settle the question of whether conscious intention has any causal role in choice.
They do point to a narrower idea: the moment we experience as “I just decided” may not mark the beginning of the entire process that led to the action.
The nervous system does not approach every situation as if it were completely new.
Experience changes the way we respond later. A familiar setting may quickly produce a sense of safety. A situation associated with past danger may bring the body into a state of alert more easily.
This is where personal memory and learning reconnect with the larger theme of the series.
The past can return as something we consciously remember, but it can also influence how the body evaluates and responds to what is happening now.
By the time a choice becomes conscious, part of the process may already have been shaped by neural activity, bodily state, and previous experience.
Consciousness then faces another task: making sense of what happened, assigning reasons to an action, and connecting it to the ongoing story of the self.
That is where Entry 04 begins.
