Some scents return often enough over a period of time to become familiar. They may appear in cycles, accompany a particular state, or return without any obvious pattern.

Then, at some point, they simply stop appearing. There is rarely a clear final occurrence. Only after enough time has passed does it become apparent that the scent has not returned.

Its absence may coincide with changes in life, emotional states, or circumstances. In other cases, no clear connection can be found.

What to record

  • The period during which the scent appeared
  • How frequently it occurred before stopping
  • The last occurrence you can remember
  • Any changes that happened around that time
  • Whether the scent returned after a long absence

Do not assume any occurrence was the "last one" until enough time has passed to look back with perspective.

A scent that once returned again and again may disappear without leaving a clear ending. Only after a long absence do we realize when the last occurrence quietly slipped into the past.
