Some scents are noticed at the very moment we move from one state into another—just after waking, as we are about to fall asleep, while emerging from a dream, after settling from a period of tension, or as a long-held emotion begins to fade.
During these transitions, attention has not yet fully settled. The outside world is already present, while our inner experience may still be catching up. A scent can appear with surprising clarity, then disappear before there is time to look for its source.
It may be accompanied by a sense of lightness, heaviness, emptiness, slight dizziness, or an unexpected change in breathing or bodily awareness. The experience is often brief and easily forgotten unless it is recorded soon afterward.
Record the experience once your state has become more stable. Do not try to hold on to the scent or prolong the moment.
Some scents appear only during a brief transition, when one state has already faded and the next has not yet fully arrived.
