Most dreams are remembered through images, sounds, or emotions. Occasionally, a scent becomes just as vivid a part of the experience.

The scent may be connected to a place or scene within the dream, but it can also appear on its own, without any accompanying image. After waking, the memory of the scent may remain even more clearly than the dream itself.

Sometimes the scent disappears the moment you wake. At other times, it lingers for a few minutes before gradually fading. Whether it lasts only a moment or stays a little longer, it is still worth recording as part of the dream experience.

What to record

  • Whether the scent appeared during the dream or after waking
  • Whether it was connected to a person, place, or image
  • How long the scent remained after waking
  • Your emotional response upon noticing it
  • Whether the scent has appeared in other dreams

Do not rush to interpret a dream based solely on the presence of a scent.

Some scents exist only in dreams. They disappear when we wake, yet the feeling they leave behind can sometimes outlast the dream itself.
