A scent appears, yet it cannot be named.

It does not lead to a specific memory, nor does it resemble any familiar scent. Each attempt to name it seems to push it a little further out of reach.

The scent is unmistakably present, yet language cannot seem to hold onto it.

The moment is often brief. The scent fades before the experience can be fully identified.

Moments like these are often worth recording, even when the scent never finds a name.

What to record

  • When the scent appeared
  • The state of the body and mind at the time
  • What happened each time you tried to name it
  • What feeling remained after the scent had faded

Do not search for a name. Do not compare it with familiar scents.

Some scents pass through experience without ever leaving a name behind.
